Ruska typically begins in northern Lapland in mid-September and moves southward over several weeks, reaching southern Finland by October. The phenomenon occurs as deciduous trees and ground vegetation stop producing chlorophyll, revealing the underlying red, orange, and yellow pigments. In Lapland, the ruska is especially dramatic because low-growing plants like blueberry bushes, lingonberry, and mountain birch create a sea of color across the fells.

There are actually two types of ruska: maaruska (ground ruska) from low vegetation like bushes and moss, and puukolorit (tree colors) from birch, aspen, and other deciduous trees. Maaruska arrives first in Lapland, often as early as late August, while the full tree ruska peaks a few weeks later.
