Finnish universities are required by law to have procedures for recognizing prior learning, covering both formal education (credits from other institutions) and informal learning (work experience and self-study). The process is governed by each university's own regulations, based on the framework set by the Universities Act.

There are two main types of recognition. Korvaaminen (substitution) replaces specific courses in your Finnish degree plan with equivalent courses completed elsewhere.
