Katsastus (Vehicle Inspection)
Mandatory periodic vehicle inspection required for all registered cars in Finland.
The mandatory periodic technical inspection that all registered motor vehicles in Finland must pass.
What it means
Katsastus is the Finnish vehicle inspection, equivalent to an MOT test in the UK or TUV in Germany. All registered vehicles must undergo periodic inspection to verify they meet safety and emissions standards. New cars have their first inspection after four years, then every two years until the car is 10 years old, and annually thereafter. The inspection checks brakes, lights, tires, suspension, emissions, and overall roadworthiness. Inspections are performed by licensed private inspection stations (katsastusasema) found in all cities and towns.
Why it matters for internationals
If you own or plan to buy a car in Finland, understanding katsastus is essential. Driving with an expired inspection is illegal and can result in fines and insurance issues. When buying a used car, checking the inspection history gives insight into the vehicle's condition. The inspection must be completed within the designated period, and if your car fails, you have a limited time to fix the issues and return for a re-inspection.
