Juhannus has roots in both ancient pagan summer solstice traditions and the Christian celebration of the birth of John the Baptist. In modern Finland, it is primarily a secular celebration of light, nature, and summer. The festivities center around bonfires (juhannuskokko), time at the cottage, sauna, swimming, and gathering with family and friends.
Midsummer Eve (juhannusaatto) is the main celebration day, even though the official public holiday is Midsummer Day (Saturday). Cities become remarkably empty as the majority of the population travels to the countryside. In northern Finland, the sun does not set at all during Juhannus, while even in Helsinki, there are only a few hours of twilight.
The national flag is raised at 6 PM on Midsummer Eve and lowered at 9 PM on Midsummer Day — it is the only time the Finnish flag is flown overnight.
