Domestic and intimate-partner violence

Recognising abuse and the helplines that support you, including in your own language.

In immediate danger?

Call 112 for police or an ambulance. It is free and works even without a SIM card or credit. The 112 Suomi app shares your location.

Call 112

Violence in a close relationship can take many forms. It is not only physical. Controlling behaviour, threats, and psychological, financial or digital abuse all count as violence, and you do not need visible injuries to ask for help.

In Finland all violence in close relationships is a crime, including within marriage. Support is available whether or not you decide to contact the police.

The helplines below are free and confidential. Several of them let you stay anonymous, and some offer support in many languages.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • You feel afraid of a partner or family member, or you change your behaviour to avoid their anger.
  • Someone controls your money, your phone, your documents, or who you can see.
  • You experience threats, insults, or pressure, even without physical violence.
  • You are told the abuse is your fault, or that no one will help you because of your background or status.
