In Finland you have the right to be treated equally. Discrimination based on origin, nationality, language, religion, gender or other personal characteristics is against the law, at work and in everyday life.
If you are treated unfairly, you can get free advice on your rights and your options. The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman handles discrimination based on origin, nationality, language, religion and similar grounds, and also monitors the rights of foreign nationals.
The Ombudsman for Equality handles gender-based discrimination, including situations related to pregnancy and the workplace.
What counts as discrimination
- Being treated worse than others because of your origin, nationality, language or religion.
- Harassment that creates a hostile or degrading atmosphere.
- Unequal treatment at work, including because of gender or pregnancy.
- Being refused a service that others receive, without an acceptable reason.
