How Finnish Taxes Work

Progressive Income Tax

Finland uses a progressive tax system with multiple brackets:

  • • €0 - €20,000: 6%
  • • €20,001 - €33,000: 17%
  • • €33,001 - €54,000: 21%
  • • €54,001+: 31%

Municipal Tax

Each municipality sets its own tax rate (typically 18-20%). This funds local services like schools, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Church Tax

Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church pay an additional 1-2% tax. You can leave the church to avoid this tax.

Social Security

Approximately 8% of your salary goes to social security, covering healthcare, unemployment benefits, and pensions.

Important Considerations:

  • • Tax rates may change annually
  • • Deductions can reduce your taxable income
  • • Non-EU citizens may have different rates
  • • Consult the Finnish Tax Administration for official rates

Tax Benefits in Finland:

  • • Comprehensive healthcare coverage
  • • Generous parental leave benefits
  • • Unemployment security
  • • Public education and services
