Uimaranta means beach or designated swimming area. Finland has thousands of public beaches maintained by municipalities at lakes, rivers, and the Baltic coastline. Municipal beaches are free to use and typically feature changing rooms, toilets, a dock or pier for jumping into the water, a sandy or grassy area for sunbathing, and often a children's play area. Water quality at official beaches is monitored throughout the summer season. With approximately 188,000 lakes, Finland offers an abundance of clean freshwater swimming. The swimming season runs from June through August, though hardier Finns start earlier and continue into September.
