Jokamiehen oikeudet (Everyman's Rights)
Finland's right to roam: the legal right for everyone to access nature, forage, and enjoy the outdoors regardless of land ownership.
Detailed explanation
Under Everyman's Rights, you may walk, ski, cycle, or ride horseback freely in the countryside, forests, and other natural areas, regardless of who owns the land. You may also pick wild berries, mushrooms, and flowers (not protected species), fish with a simple rod and line, swim and boat in waterways, and camp temporarily in the wilderness at a reasonable distance from dwellings.
These rights come with responsibilities. You must not disturb, damage, or litter. You must not approach too close to people's homes, damage trees or vegetation, disturb nesting birds, or drive motor vehicles off-road without permission. Hunting and fishing with nets or lures require separate permits.
Everyman's Rights are not written in a single law but are established through a combination of constitutional provisions, customary law, and various statutes. They reflect Finland's deep cultural connection to nature and the principle that natural resources should be accessible to all.
