Finland's parental leave system was reformed in 2022 to be more equal. Both parents receive their own quota, with some days transferable.
Birthing parent: 40 pregnancy days + 160 parental days (~6.5 months total)
Other parent: 160 parental days (~5.5 months)
Up to 63 days can be transferred between parents
Total family quota: 360 days (~14 months)
Allowance is ~70% of salary, paid by Kela

Daycare options (päivähoito)
Every child under school age has a legal right to daycare after parental leave ends. Multiple options are available.
Municipal daycare (päiväkoti): professionally run centers, most common choice
Family daycare (perhepäivähoito): small groups (4-5 children) in caregiver's home
Private daycare: independent centers, often with specific pedagogies (Montessori, waldorf)
Home care allowance: ~€380/month if you stay home with a child under 3
All options include meals and are supervised by qualified staff
Right to daycare applies immediately after parental leave ends

Preschool (esikoulu)
Preschool is mandatory for all 6-year-olds and prepares children for primary school. It's completely free.

During pregnancy: 10-15 visits including ultrasounds, blood tests, birth preparation
After birth: regular baby health check-ups, vaccinations, development monitoring
Baby's first year: approximately 8 visits with nurse and doctor
Ages 1-6: annual check-ups tracking growth and development
